As the author, I'm understandably biased, but I love Zelda Machinko. No character has ever spoken to me the way she does. She's witty Once a man sees your girdle, there aren't any more secrets.
Ginevra Molly Potter (née Weasley)
She's pragmatic Never trust a man who dresses too well or stays too clean. It ain't natural, and whatever he's up to probably ain't legal. And she's so gosh darn real I didn't want the book to end.

I'd be writing one of those required fact-flushing scenes that can slow things down a bit and suddenly someone would knock on the door and announce an arrest or another body and we were off again.

Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Take both shoes off and get comfortable. This is one you'll want to read straight through. Dec 01, Cathy rated it liked it. The series characters are well drawn and realistic.
One Shoe Off (A Jordan Daily News Mystery, #2) by Sue Merrell
You can get attached to them as they work their way through some very real life problems as well as the less ordinary ones associated with reporting. I especially liked Becky's realization of her own issues with race and hope that will be dealt with in the next book.
Some of the other "guest" characters don't hav the review is the result of winning a GoodReads giveaway. Some of the other "guest" characters don't have the same degree of complexity. Teasdale in particular lacked enough exploration to make him believable. He was almost a cliche to the point that his role in the main story wasn't a surprise.

There were quite a few plot lines. The two main ones were woven together well. Having Zelda speaking in Josie's dreams was an interesting twist. The personal stories were kept small enough that they didn't interfere with the main ones but still helped grow the characters. But the one plot line that didn't fit was the Rudy Ranch one. It didn't add to the book or the characters.
It was more of a distraction since it didn't help more the other plots along. I would rather have had that idea been the basis for another book and given the time to expand the issues. The newspaper setting would have been perfect to do that. I loved the steps between time periods. It was very easy to follow and an engaging mystery. I definitely have to go back and read the first book in this series. I loved the intrigue and it moved at a wonderful pace. Covert Art — Nice but not amazing. I do like the newspaper as a background. Mar 23, Michele Smith-aversa rated it really liked it.
This is the second book in a great new series based in the newsroom of a small suburb of Chicago. The main character is Josie, a single mom and editor of the newspaper.
Josie has challenges balancing home and work but it isn't dwelled upon. She is smart and strong, but also has just enough self-doubt to make her easy to relate to. This particular mystery combines the past and present. Josie trips across a missing persons case that happened 30 years ago. Zelda Machinko, a strong, single newspaper editor not unlike Josie disappeared, leaving behind only one clue - her shoe.

Great News Town was a book I couldn't read at night--I live alone and can't read things that make every noise sound like there's someone outside. But I was compelled to continue reading during daylight hours because I wanted to know what happened next. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone who likes reading crime novels or mysteries.
