Good book for an overview of all the sciences and how law has affected the field of forensics.
My dad is mentioned in a case in this book since he is an ex CPD. I got this for him as a surprise gift. He knew he was quoted in it but didn't have a copy. I put a post it on the page where his name is, and he thought it was pretty cool. Format: Hardcover. I am using this book to teach an undergraduate criminal justice studies course. While there is a lot of good information, and the cases are presented in a comprehensive matter, there are a couple of basic problems with the book.
First and foremost, it needed to be edited much better than it was. Often there will be a paragraph generally poorly written and then a paragraph directly beneath it, saying the same thing, except more clearly. It became apparent to me that in many instances throughout the book the author re-wrote a paragraph but then he or his editors neglected to take out the paragraph they were replacing. So, it makes for a redundant read in many places.
Another problem is that this book is used for teaching, and often the students don't know all the different names for the parties to a case.

So, it does not help when the book describes one party as the "petitioner" and then in the next sentence uses the title of "defendant" when referring to the same party, without having explained why the same party might have different names at different stages of the case trial and appeal. In this particular instance, it was particularly troubling because both "petitioner" and "defendant" were used to describe the party at the trial level, which is inaccurate. Another problem arose when, in the midst of a paragraph, the Supreme Court would be quoted, however there would be no quotation marks surrounding the quote.
The effect of this was a shifting focus of perspective - i. All without quotes. Very hard to keep track of who was finding what. Because this book is not taught at the law school level at least not that I have seen I guess it is marketed toward undergraduate courses mainly. It does have a lot of very good information in it, and makes for a pretty easy read, however, I caution anyone using it to teach from to read it closely and beware of any inaccuracies, in order to address them in your classrooms.
Particularly when we tell our students that "words matter," it is incumbent upon us to ensure that the material we give them to read is of the highest quality. I just wish the editors had done a better job on this book, and I would give it more stars. I have taught a course in Forensic Science and the Law for six years now and I started out using this book.

One of the problems is that it deals heavily with Illinois case law which doesn't help when I am teaching in Virginia; the biggest problem is that it was written in and within a couple of years Professor Kiely died and no one has revised updated it. Forensic Science has advanced by leaps and bounds since this book was written and so there is void where current information should be. I have stopped using as a required textbook and simply tell my students they can refer to for certain information. See all 5 reviews.
