Christ's atonement, however, is effective only for those who believe. God's grace has to do with his call to salvation. Only God's irresistible grace can draw the elect to salvation and make a person willing to respond. This grace cannot be obstructed or resisted. Through prevenient grace, God removed the effects of Adam's sin. Because of "free will" men are also able to resist God's grace. The free will of man versus God's sovereign will is linked to many points in the Calvinism vs. Except for God's irresistible grace, men are entirely incapable of responding to God on their own.
Perseverance of the saints is tied to the "once saved, always saved" debate and the question of eternal security. The Calvinist says the elect will persevere in faith and will not permanently deny Christ or turn away from Him. Believers are secure in the faith because God will finish the work he began. It's important to note that all of the doctrinal points in both theological positions have a biblical foundation, which is why the debate has been so divisive and enduring throughout church history.

Different denominations disagree over which points are correct, rejecting all or some of either system of theology, leaving most believers with a mixed perspective. Because both Calvinism and Arminianism deal with concepts that go far beyond human comprehension, the debate is certain to continue as finite beings try to explain an infinitely mysterious God.

It is no small impediment which these dogmas place in the way of piety. And, truly, the distance of one of these states from the other is far too great, for a man to be able to pass from one to the other without some intermediate steps.
Yet he is assuredly void of understanding who entertains any doubt whether it is possible for a man to be without sin after this life. But I do not wish to enter into a contest about this question. This indeed I confess: For I considered it the best course to discuss that decree of predestination which is the foundation of Christianity, or our salvation, and of the assurance of salvation; and upon which the apostle treats in the Eighth and Ninth chapters of the Epistle to the Romans, and in the First chapter of that to the Ephesians.
QUERIES: Is it possible for any believer, without a special revelation, to be certain or assured that he will not decline or fall away from the faith? Are those who have faith bound to believe, that they will not decline from the faith?
