Special treat. This is a gem of a hotel restaurant in coverted convent just outside the gate of Alnwick castle Beautiful Decor in modern country style Wonderful welcome from staff and pre dinner drinks were superb.

The menu is excellent and each course is perfectly cooked. I had a beautifully cooked lobster starter followed by mouth watering lamb Great advice on wines to suit each course and they complimented the food. Avoiding the predictable tweed and log fire approach to a hotel in these parts, owner Debbie Cook has overseen a modishly spruce set up with the potential melancholy of the predominantly blue colour scheme alleviated by the cosy size of the public rooms, the natural sunlight that pours through the windows and an array of comfortingly quirky touches.

For example, the trio of chandeliers inside giant birdcages on the end of church bell ropes which hang in the central stairwell. The Cookie Jar takes its shooting parties seriously. The cigar hut which looks like a mini cricket pavilion in the garden is another eccentric touch though most will prefer the casual atmosphere, wingback chairs and Penguin Classic paperbacks in the street facing main lounge. The solitary suite, The Chapel, is one of the most unique rooms in the North East.
As the name suggests, it is the former chapel of the convent, the stained glass windows still intact but with the altar replaced by a huge walk in shower. An ancient cinema lamp on a tripod and a huge sofa help create a surprisingly welcoming vibe. The rest of the hotel is made up of two Mother Superior rooms, both with knockout views of Alnwick Castle, five Luxury rooms and three Cosy rooms, which are the lowest priced.
The Alnmouth room in the latter category is a genuine bolthole. At the time of writing evening meals were not yet being served this is due to change in spring but breakfast was an unctuous affair, featuring a buffet of croissants and yoghurts and cooked options including kippers sourced from nearby Craster.
