At the same time, the inhumanity shown by these characters can be nothing more than a reflection of the inhumanity they have had to face in their own lives. After only a few issues of this story, though, Dickens seems to have come to the conclusion that it could be developed far more than the fairly limited structure that we see at the beginning.
As a result, he began broadening the narrative and broadening its themes and leitmotifs, but did so apparently without having a very clear idea of the overall plot development. This can be seen in the middle of the novel when Nancy and Bill suddenly and unexpectedly take over as the main focus and Oliver himself almost becomes marginalised.
But, as a fully principal character of a fully fledged novel, as a hero, the Oliver we see at the very beginning has the problem of being simply too good to be true. But by making him overly perfect, this brings authorial problems either because readers would fail to resonate with such a model of perfection or else because the novel then becomes something else, perhaps a moral fable, but certainly not a plausibly realistic narration.
It makes Oliver more tangible, it gives him identifiable feelings and it shows him to be a fighter for justice.

And finally, the journey as a metaphor. This is another subliminal way in which Dickens connects his tale to the broader socio-political landscape of the early nineteenth century. The coach is too fast, of course, and Oliver is by now far too weak. The hill that Oliver struggles to climb is an easy journey for them.
