If all the stories in this book had measured up to the first three, which are amazingly good, I would have rated it five stars.

They didn't, so it gets four. I have Volume 2 and Volume 3 of Hemingway short stories on my To Read list, but I think I will pursue other as-yet-unread Hemingway works first, in the presumption that the stories collected in those two volumes are more like the latter stories in this volume. Only listened to "The Snows of Kilimanjaro. I found them dull and basic. I loved reading Hawthorne, florid prose and books that expanded my vocabulary. Hemingway certainly didn't qualify. I decided that perhaps my appreciation would have changed in the 25 years since I've read him but, alas, no.
I do not like it, Sam I Am. I will no Only listened to "The Snows of Kilimanjaro. I will not read Hemingway again.

It was interesting, and he does good descriptions. But they felt disjointed, and I am not interested in things like bullfighting. View 1 comment. I am going to give him another try with For Whom the Bell Tolls.

The Complete Short Stories: Volume One
It was nice to be able to experience his work through the medium of the short story, because you could enjoy his unique ability to fully paint a picture down to the slightest minutiae without adding anything superfluous in the process, across a range of subjects as opposed to just one. After reading this it's easy to see why Hemingway i Hemingway is a boss. After reading this it's easy to see why Hemingway is known to be a "mans man", both in life and in his writing. The subject matter is bold to say the least; adultery, promiscuity, desperation, delusion, poverty, revolution, madness, despair, and almost everything in between regardless of whether you immediately recognize it as such.
It's easy enough for us to take for granted the fact that anything's fair game to be talked or written about in today's day and age, but he definitely pushed the envelope for his time and romanticized the thrill of adventure for future generations still to this day. Minimal are his epic drinking binges. There are 18 stories in this volume, and Keach does a beautiful job of reading Hemingway's prose.
